Reception
We have been incredibly busy in Reception! Lots of art has been created through our continued study of famous artists. The children thoroughly enjoyed new ways of exploring and replicating the work of Jackson Pollock. Dragging and swirling paint using wool as well as splattering paint with toothbrushes and syringes was enormous fun! During our study of portraits, we came across the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo who inspired us to produce our own imaginative portraits made entirely of fruit and vegetables. This led to British food week and many a discussion about seasonal produce and our favourite food. We even did a blind tasting to see who could best identify fruit by taste alone.
As you can imagine, the children were itching to get their aprons back on for a bit of cooking! They can now add bread making to their ever expanding repertoire! Motivated by the story of ‘The Little Red Hen’ they wanted to bake some bread, and unlike the characters in the story, Reception were more than eager to help and they all reaped their reward at snack time. It was wonderful to see the class retelling the story with such enthusiasm and expression! We were also pleased to see the children using their growing knowledge of letters and sounds to produce some good writing.
We have been exploring patterns in colour, shape and number using a wide variety of objects, and the children have played all sorts of games in small groups to further develop their number skills. One of the conkers from our autumn collection was brought to life this week when the children started coming up with names for it! Suffice to say, 'Conky the Conker' wasn't very good at counting, recognising or ordering numbers and kept getting into a muddle but thankfully help wasn't far away and Reception took great delight in correcting his mistakes!
Reception also enjoyed being scientists and successfully completed a challenge to design an umbrella using household items. They were bursting with ideas and extremely keen to test and tweak their prototypes. The children were extremely proud to discover their toys under their brollies were completely dry!
To kick start a whirlwind tour of Our Wonderful World Week we read 'Emma Jane's Aeroplane' by Katie Haworth. We located some of the countries she visited on a globe and learnt about famous landmarks, customs and traditions. We even made our own passports! We can’t wait to learn more about the countries and places that are special to our class as we continue with 'Our Wonderful World' theme. As part of Black History Month, the children have enjoyed a number of stories exploring culture and created some incredible jewellery and masks which they are desperate to wear! We'll be sure to send them home in time for half-term.
We look forward to welcoming some of you to the classroom next week via zoom!
Best wishes
