We made it! What a term! It really doesn’t feel like very long ago at all when we first logged onto Seesaw at the beginning of 2021 and shared our wishes for the New Year. For many of the children, they wrote wishes about being able to spend more time with loved ones and friends. With only three days to go until we are reunited as a class, we can finally be back in our classroom, learning together again.
We have had such a chock-a-block few weeks in our calendar, and I am impressed and awestruck with how the children (and grown-ups!) have persevered with the learning activities each day. You have all done such an incredible job.
When we return next week, we will continue our Literacy topic of Traction Man, planning and writing our own adventures which will culminate in a whole class comic book, ready to take pride of place in our book corner. The children have already used the first two Traction Man stories to practise writing speech and dialogue, create new characters from everyday objects and write using different tenses, taking inspiration from Mini Grey.
In Maths, the children’s focus last week was on 3D shapes. They used nets to create their very own little 3D aliens. Don’t they just look adorable? Perhaps some of them had even met Perseverance when it landed on Mars last week.
Our topic focus last week was Buddhism. The children immersed themselves in stories of how Siddhartha Gautama, a Nepalese prince, became enlightened under the Bodhi tree. The children listened to the gathering sounds of the singing bowl and practised some meditation too. They created kindness trees and thought about wishes they had for the people around them, writing them on prayer flags. What a kind and thoughtful group our Year 2 children are! Our second topic focus was on our locality. The children observed human and physical features in their local area, created a 3D map and thought about how certain features within our community and our roads are there to keep us all safe.
Last but not least, what fun we had during World Book Day! The children looked adorable in their outfits and costumes. We are very much looking forward to seeing them again next week. The children were very excited to share their books, describe their characters and see who their friends had decided to be. They went on a Scavenger hunt, made some miniature books and helped solve a mystery. We also had some little catch ups at the end of the day to share what we got up to. I’m hoping that after such an eventful day, the children managed to get cosy and spend a little quiet time with their favourite book.
This term has certainly been quite the adventure. I would like to finish off by saying a huge thank you to everyone involved at home and in the Year 2 classroom, in ensuring the children continued to learn, persist and smile through what has been a very challenging time for everyone. I cannot wait to see you on Monday!
