Upstairs Nursery News
Last week we have started our topic on’ I wonder how it works and how it moves…’, with a focus on toys. The children have used favourite toys to create stories, sorted them according to material and explored shapes and patterns by printing with various toys. Our Philosophy for Children sessions have centred around concepts of reality and fiction, discussing questions such as ‘Do you need a toy to play?’ and ‘What makes something real?’.
‘Real things grow and change.’(Hannah)
‘The flower is real because it exists. It grows. You need to give it water. If you don’t, it will die.’(Adeline)
‘The lion is not real because it’s a toy. Real lions are big and they move when they see food.’(Freddie T.)
‘Fairies are not real. You only see them in books.’(Harry)
World Book Week has inspired the children to take on the role of an author, illustrator or storyteller. The children have been busy using story baskets and shadow puppets to create their own narratives using a correct story structure. We have really enjoyed acting them out in small groups!
They have also raised to the challenge of building bridges across rivers, to help the Billy Goats Gruff cross safely. It has been great to see the children applying their critical thinking skills as they tested their ideas and made changes, showing great determination to overcome problems.
World Book Day celebration on Thursday gave the children an opportunity to transform themselves into their favourite character. They have enjoyed parading to show their outfits and sharing their story books with their friends.
