Year 1 News
The first half term of the Summer really has flown by!
The children have been very busy as scientists, artists, authors, mathematicians amongst wearing many other hats. The children have continued to watch in awe as their bean stalks creep higher and higher, winding around the windows towards the sunlight. One of the children measured the height of their plant at 90cm already! We will pot them ready to cultivate some beans by the end of the Summer term.
As artists the children have been learning all about Georgia O’keeffe, the mother of American Modernism. They learned about her life and looked at some of her more abstract paintings of flowers and plants. They then thought about how to draft work, focussing on making their pieces better each time with small details and careful observations. They each chose a flower, zoomed in and drew just a portion of their chosen plant. The children focussed on colour mixing, as well as complementary colours to allow their flowers to stand out. Their finished pieces are pretty spectacular!
In maths the children have been learning all about sharing equally, fractions and telling the time. They made their own clocks and have been sneakily taking the clocks from our maths area to ask each other what time it is.
They also worked together to create a collaborative piece of art, using artist’s canvases and acrylic paints. Each child painted one square of a Georgia O’Keefe piece, and we put these together to make a large painting. The results were outstanding.
Have a lovely break and see you all ready for our final half term.
