Year 1 News
Another busy week has flown by and Year 1 have continued to impress as mathematicians, writers, artists, chefs, scientists and cleaners! We hope you all enjoyed the rhubarb crumble and pizza the children made for the Farmer’s market. They certainly had fun creating their products and watching them go down a storm.
Our literacy focus for last week was building towards writing a story independently. The children began by reading ‘5 minutes peace’ by Jill Murphy and thought about their own families, before sequencing the story, editing pieces of text, creating story maps and finally using their pictures and talk to retell the story in their own words. They are getting so good at trying to make their work as accurate as possible!
In our weekly Jigsaw lessons the children have been thinking about what makes them feel safe, and what they have been proud of, from upside down handstands in swimming pools, to writing a whole page of letters with lead ins and lead outs, there was certainly a lot of variety in their achievements.
In Maths the children have started to use addition symbols to make number facts through part whole models. They created their own models using numicon, counters and even themselves!
Our art lessons have continued to focus on portraits, with the children thinking first about proportion, drawing lines on their own faces, and creating marks with charcoal before moving onto their larger scale portraits. Inevitably, our classroom was rather a sooty mess by the end, but the children did have a lot of fun and their portraits look just wonderful. We can’t wait to display them up on the wall.
Our current focuses for the coming weeks are ‘Our Wonderful World’ and ‘Black History Month.’ We have looked at how the world is made up of continents and uses maps and atlases to pinpoint the seven continents, learning through song. We also read all about Jean-Michel Basquiat’s life, a poem by Maya Angelou, and how Marcus Rashford helped children to stay fed during the pandemic. We look forward to hearing more about where in the world we come from over the coming weeks.
